September 1, 2012, at the Disaster Prevention Day Drills for FY2012

"The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11 of last year caused tremendous damage to an exceedingly wide area, mainly in the Tohoku region. The biggest lesson learned through this disaster has been the importance of being well-prepared for disasters that exceed the scope of our assumptions. It has been revealed anew that should a massive earthquake occur in the Nankai Trough, it could cause damage far more devastating than the estimations made heretofore. Should such an enormous earthquake actually take place, it will be simply unacceptable to claim that it was beyond our assumptions. In order to be prepared for a disaster exceeding our assumptions and minimize the resulting damage, it is important that each and every member of the public be aware of the necessity for preparation and take preparatory measures."
