May 23, 2012 at the House of Representatives Special Committee on the Comprehensive Reform of Social Security and Taxation Systems, in response to a question from Representative Michiyo Takagi
"I myself have two sons. The thing that has been most moving for me was when, at the age of one or thereabouts, they suddenly began trying to stand even though they had been crawling until then. That isn’t something that their mothers or fathers teach them; just instinctively, children try again and again to stand, even though it may be painful. No toddler ever decides it’s simpler just to keep lying down. I believe it is extremely important for the country to nurture from a very early stage through sound education and childcare these young shoots that seek to extend themselves and grow."
