April 28, 2012, at the May Day Central Rally
"We will not evade the difficulties we face in restoring the three areas for vitality - children, the regions, and employment. The comprehensive reform of the social security and taxation systems has been an urgent issue since before the Great East Japan Earthquake. It must be achieved at all costs. This is the first step towards overcoming the current crisis of Japan, ensuring the future of the children, and reviving the power of the country and of the people. What is important is to do today those things we can do today and to do now those things we can do now. The accumulation of such efforts step by step, day by day, and one by one will lead to a sound tomorrow. I aim to restore a society in which tomorrow will be better than today as the result of such single-minded efforts."
